Drug manufactures Eisai took the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence to court for not allowing people in the early stage of the disease to receive the drug. After months of fighting, NICE reversed the ban allowing people in the early stages with mild symptoms to have treatment.

While that was all good and well for those in the later stages of the disease, it did nothing for victims suffering severely. This led to a study that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine that found the same drugs can and will continue to work in people whose illness has become severe.

For a great deal of time this was nothing more than a hope. But now, compelling evidence has been found that treatment with drugs like donepezil can continue to help patients in the later, more severe stages of the disease. Patients can better remember, understand, communicate and perform daily tasks.

It is important to recognize the fact that these drugs are by no means a cure. Sadly, all 295 patients the study was conducted on continued to get worse. But the bright side is the downhill progress was much slower in those who were given the drug with a similar drug, mementine.

To find the evidence, research measured patients’ scores on tests of thinking and memory along with their ability to dress themselves and conduct normal everyday activities.

Doctors are a bit hesitant, however, to prescribe dementia drugs a lot of times because they come with a massive placebo effect. At the same time, many are beginning to ease into the idea that these drugs may actually deliver real benefits for people at all stages.

While progression is tremendous and the new findings are optimistic, there is still a real need for new drugs that can check or even cure the disease. Relieving the symptoms and memory problems is a start, but it is not enough. Researchers are constantly looking for more funding to crack the problem of finding a cure to Alzheimer’s. Until then, there is only hope that prescribing current drugs to people at all levels can help them experience a little more to life than what was first thought and keep their cognitive skills in better shape.

Cognitive Skills And Memory

Cognitive skills consist of a range of abilities of the brain that allow it to solve problems, focus butter and these skills are critical for learning. One of the main cognitive skills is memory. Cognitive skills also encompass reasoning, logic and audio and visual processing.

Short term memory is used for like remembering something until you write it down or remembering multi step directions to accomplish something. This is information the brain needs to complete something else but does not need to hole onto forever.

Cognitive skills are also essential for attention span. Attention is dividing into three areas sustained attention, selective attention and divided attention. Sustained attention is the ability to stay focused until the task is done. Selective attention is the ability to stay focused even when there are distractions around. Divided attention means that you are actually paying attention to more than one thing at once and processing all of the information.

The other thing that is controlled by your cognitive skills is logic and reasoning. Reasoning gives you the ability to work through problems and prove and disprove deductions to come up with an answer. This is the skill used for complex processing and problem solving.

The Brain And Its Cognitive Abilities

The brain is the most important organ in your body. It is “you”…all of your other organs can be transplanted and you would still be the same person. Once your brain is removed from your body, you no longer exist. Besides using your brain to “think” it also does many other jobs for the body.

All the data you get from the world around you through your senses is interpreted through your brain cognitive skills. Your brain and brain abilities controls your body’s temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. Your brain takes care of all your automatic functions, like swallowing, walking, and running, without even having to think about them. Our brain and cognitive skills does all of these functions quicker and more effectively than some of the largest and most powerful computers in the world.

For all of these functions and skills, our brain is small and only weighs about 3 pounds. Even though your brain makes up only 2% of your body, it uses over 20% of your total blood supply.

There are three main parts to the brain. The largest is the cerebrum which is on the top of your brain. The cerebral cortex is the convoluted surface of the cerebrum. This is the part that enables you to learn, reason, and remember.

The cerebrum is divided into two halves, which are named the right and left hemispheres. These halves are responsible for different tasks. When the two halves share information between them, they use the corpus callosum.

No one really understands the process that your brain uses to store and retrieve information. Scientists believe it works because of the way individual brain cells, called neurons, are connected to each other. Each neuron has a covering called dendrites, which are long channels that can receive electrical signals from other neurons. Each neuron is connected to thousands of other neurons.

When your brain thinks, feels sad, or does something, millions of neurons are sending messages to and from one another. Each neuron has a different shape, depending on what they do. However, all neurons share the ability of linking others in order to pass electrical and chemical messages.

Every time the brain learns something, your neurons grow more dendrites to become attached to other neurons and your cognitive skills are working. The more you repeat learning, or practice what you have learned, the strong these connections between neurons become and the more your cognitive abilities retain that information. This is why the human brain is more powerful than any computer that has ever been made.
