As a result without feeling confident the medication is the right treatment a doctor may not prescribed it and the mental health issue goes untreated. Untreated mental health disorders such as depression are the main reason for suicides in the United States.

One primary care physician from Howard County Medical in St Paul said that it is estimated up to 35% of all primary care visits have some kind of mental health component. In rural areas there is also a stigma associated with seeing a counselor or having a mental disorder. This means treatment is usually delayed and very far progressed by the time the person seeks help.

Brain And The Miracle Of Nature

The human brain is a true miracle of nature. It is the most complex organ in our bodies and controls virtually every part. Still, we don’t yet fully understand Linkhow our mind works. The brain controls the way in which we respond to external stimuli. Every thing we see, hear, touch and feel is controlled and interpreted by the brain. Brain research shows that if we touch something and it feels hot, the nerves in our fingers send a signal to our brains and it interprets the input as hot.

The brain then sends a signal to our hand to pull away from the hot object so we don’t hurt ourselves any worse than we might otherwise have to. The whole process occurs almost instantaneously with virtually no conscious effort on our parts.

But the thing we sets us apart from virtually all other animals is our ability to take in input and formulate decisions or actions based on limited input and information. We would also automatically breathe faster so put more oxygen in the blood as well. Again as indicated earlier, these kinds of functions occur with virtually no conscious thought on our parts.

The technical magazines make a very big deal about modern computer’s ability to perform parallel processing. Well our brains do this all this the time. It is truly multitasking on steroids.

This is much we have learned about the manner in which our brains operate. But there is certainly much more to learn. We may never totally understand exactly how our brains operate but if we take care of it through good nutrition and effective stimulation, it should be able to enhance the quality of our lives for many years.

Neuroscience is the very interesting science behind the nervous system and one of the most fabulous tools that we have, our brain. There are three main parts of neuroscience. The central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system and the endocrine system are the three main parts of neuroscience. Obviously, you can classify the brain and neuroscience in many different ways as our understanding of the mind is still very limited. The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord. You brain with the help of the nervous system controls all of your body and organs and makes everything do the job it is supposed to. Your spinal cord is a thick bundle of nerves that carries information throughout the body for the brain.

The peripheral nervous system is made up of nerve cells or neurons that are wired together through the body like a communication system. Neurons carry messages around th body in the form of electrical and chemical impulses. Unlike other body tissues neurons have a limited ability to repair themselves. Over time if your brain loses neurons they are usually never replaced in your body. Still, because of neurogenesis, depending what do you do with your brain and how often you challenge it, you could start to re-create new neurons. This is part of what we is called brain plasticity, or the capacity of the mind to rewire itself.

The endocrine system works with the brain and nerves to keep the body functioning. It controls how we grow, our feelings, our hunger and temperature. The endocrine system also controls our hormones. All three of these parts of the nervous system are studied in neuroscience as well as other specific diseases and disorders that affect the brain and nervous system.

In the past neuroscience was a part of biology. A Brief Description Of Your Brain

The human brain is an amazing organ. It controls virtually all of our bodily functions. But most importantly it is what gives us the ability to sense the world around us and respond to it. Our cognition and understanding of our outside world take place in the brain. Let’s find out a bit more about the organ which makes us what we are – the brain.

The brain is safely contained within a bony cavity called the skull. It floats within a viscous fluid which helps protects and cushion the brain from bumps and bruises. The brain is mostly composed by water (over 75%).

All animals have a brain. But the human brain is quite different in size and in functions than other animals. First of all it is much larger if we compare it to the the brains of other animals similar which are similar in size to us. As an average, it is usually about three times larger.

This added size and special features of the brain is what makes it incredibly complex and highly functioning possible. The added size of the brain is taken up largely by the cerebral cortex. This is a large mass of tissue which is located around the area of the forebrain and where highly complex operations take place.

Another section of the brain called the frontal lobes is quite large as well. This area is thought to perform functions like self-control, planning, critical reasoning, and complex thought. There is another specialized section of the brain which is called occipital lobe. It is believed to mainly provide vision function. It is also quite a bit larger than similar sections of the brains of other animals.

The human brain is composed of almost 100 billion cells and a similar number of neurons. These specialized cells communicate signals to each other through a network of synapses. The information in our brain travels faster than 250mph or 400km/h! Don’t believe the ancient myth that we use only 10% of our brain. This is not true and science shows how by leveraging all the different parts, we can as human beings properly function.

As indicated earlier, the brain performs many essential functions. It controls and monitors most functions of the body. It is able to receive information concerning these parts of the body and then respond in an appropriate manner.

The area called the brainstem is the more primitive part of the brain and is believed to control most of the automatic functions in the body. This includes breathing, heart rate and others.

But a section called the neocortex is where higher level thought is believed to occur. It is the area which makes us so special and higher functioning. The brain is being studied intensively all the time.

We have learned much more about the brain in recent year and there is certainly much more neuroscience will learn about this amazing organ. The work to better understand our mindsis only starting.

It is no surprise that most learn best with hands-on work. Sitting back and watching will not provide the same kind of training as actually doing something yourself. But why is it that hands-on learning is so powerful and can have such a large impact on our brain?

Tactile activities, or hands-on activities are encouraged for anyone looking to learn something new regardless of the age. It might be because of two separate memory systems that this method is so beneficial. The first reason behind this is semantic memory while the other is episodic memory, which each being in different locations of the brain.

Semantic memory consists of all of the things we set out to learn and remember like mathematics, history and even something as simple as what number comes after 4 and what letter comes after c. There is a reason we have all been taught the correct answer to these questions, but it is because of our semantic memory that we are capable of remembering and retrieving the answers.

When it comes to remembering where you were last night or what you did for your birthday last year, most would be able retrieve this as well. This is all information that is stored in our episodic memory, hence the episodes of our lives. Think of it as our autobiography and the events that have made up who we are and what we have done. This information is stored unintentionally.

It is the combination of these two systems and their teamwork that help us with so much in life. Although they are two completely separate pieces of the brain, the two working together accomplish so much. However, it is possible for one to work better than the other, or even for one to completely lose touch of reality. This is the case for many Alzheimer’s victims who lose their episodic memory but not their semantic.

Knowing and understanding the impact of each of these memory systems can help one truly recognize the benefits of hands-on activities. Whether it is in the classroom or right in your own living room, hands-on activities are ever so important to further the education, learning abilities, and overall intelligence of your brain regardless of what the material is that is being learned.

The Power Of The Brain

The power of your brain is endless. The thoughts you think and how you process them can have a very powerful effect on everything in your life. It can make a difference on the simple things like keeping up with your car keys and it can also make a difference on the big things. The power of the brain may be endless but how you harness it and keep it in shape is up to you.

When we are younger we are always learning new stuff and getting our brain out for workout. During this stage our brain is constantly growing and becoming better at processing information. However when we get older and our lives become more stable we start to push ourselves to learn less.

It is not that we don’t want to learn anymore or have no interest. We simply don’t find the time anymore. There are so many daily tasks that must be completed between work and family obligations we are lucky when we get a whole night’s worth of sleep let alone time to learn a new skill.

The great thing about keeping your brain active is that it really only takes a few minutes a day. It’s something you can do anywhere. There are many things you can do to make your brain more productive that fit right into your daily life.

One of those ways includes eating brain foods. There are many foods that are high in the types of nutrients that are good for your brain. Fish is a great source of the omega 3 oils that are good for your brain. Getting out and doing a few minutes of exercise a day is also great for the brain. This is especially true if you are playing games that require skill and strategy such as basketball.

If you have the time you may want to consider taking on a new hobby. Learning a new skill is a great way to keep your brain active which will help it stay be more productive. There are also brain fitness software programs that are designed specifically to help you boost your brain and memory.

Your brain is one of the most valuable parts of your body it is what keeps you moving and being able to do what you need to do. So spend a few minutes each day helping your brain be more productive and see how great the results can be.

Memory Loss And Your Brain

One of the most fascinating things about a human brain is its unique ability to be able to learn fast and on the fly. It truly is an amazing organ and one that we still don’t know everything about. What we do know is that through a proper diet, regular exercise, and certain brain training, we can far improve our cognitive abilities over time.

As we age we naturally lose the ability to recall certain memories as easy as we did when we were younger. This memory loss can either be mild or severe depending on genetics and how well we took care of ourselves over the years. Luckily, we can avoid much of this memory loss and even reverse this process by using specific brain training techniques.
Who is at greatest risk for memory loss at an older age?

This is a question that many brain researchers deal with and the answer can vary depending on a multitude of variables. But many studies have shown that those who do live a responsible life growing up, eating and maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, and most of all challenging the brain often, have a far less likelihood of losing their memory as they age. These people also are less likely to develop any brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and/or dementia.

On the other hand, those that don’t take care of their bodies, alcoholics, drug addicts and obese people are at a far greater risk of losing their ability to remember things. Most importantly, the people that don’t challenge their minds constantly or consistently will notice a sharp decline in their cognitive abilities as they age.

The brain is much like the muscles in our body. You can train them to be physically strong and to endure tough athletic tasks. But if you don’t take care of them and choose not to train or look after your body, you may find it hard to perform even the easiest of daily routines.

Your brain can be trained to learn more and operate like a well oiled machine. With proper brain training you will be able to focus with the greatest of ease and clarity and be able to process information fast and efficiently and sharply increase cognitive abilities. If you don’t care for your brain, your brain will lose its abilities to fire on all cylinders and brain cells that don’t get used will simply die off.

Brain Plasticity And Mental Health

Up until around the 1970s it was widely accepted that throughout adulthood our nervous system was fixed, meaning it was impossible for new neurons to develop after birth. However, a new theory of brain plasticity, also called neuroplasticity, has become he current accepted theory of how our brain ages.

So, what is brain plasticity? The broad definition is it is the lifelong ability of the brain to reorganize neural pathways based on new experiences. Basically, we continually acquire new knowledge and skills throughout our lives. In order for us to learn a new skill or fact our brain must undergo a functional change. When the brain changes to learn new things, which is brain plasticity.

One great example of how neuroplasticity works is to imagine making a footprint in a pile of snow. In order for your footprint to appear in the snow, a change must occur in the snow. The shape of the snow changes as you press your foot into the snow. The same situation occurs in your brain. Your neural circuitry reorganizes in response to experiences.

Plasticity plays a role in learning and memory. What research over the last two decades has proven is that there are two types of modifications that occur in the brain during learning. First, there is a change in the internal structure of neurons, primarily in the area of synapses. Second, there is an increase in the number of synapses between neurons.

While brain plasticity occurs throughout your entire life, there are actually different types of plasticity that occur during certain periods. One type of plasticity will be more relevant during one period of your life and will be less prevalent during another period.

There are two main conditions that neuroplasticity occurs in the brain. First, there is developmental and learning and memory plasticity. These occur during normal brain development when your brain is first beginning to process sensory information. Second, there is an adaptive plasticity that occurs to work for lost function or to maximize the remaining functions of the brain in the event of brain injury.

Finally, it is interesting to note that genetics are not the only factor that influences the brain. The environment that an individual is in shapes the brain. Also, an individual’s actions in that environment also play a role in brain plasticity.

Brain plasticity, or neuroplasticity, is a truly remarkable concept that has taken off in the last three decades as the agreed upon theory as to how our brain changes over time. It is an interesting concept and one that I hope you have enjoyed learning about.

One common problem with our busy and stressful lives today is memory loss. It can be easy to get so many things going at once that you simply begin to forget things. This is mainly prevalent in adults, especially elders, but kids are not immune. It is important to keep your mind sharp to help you avoid problems with your memory. Television, computers, friends, school, and a large number of other sources are simply overloading our brains and people are having trouble focusing and remembering because of it. It is going to take commitment and require you to train your brain on a daily basis. People tend to stop training their brains which leads to a stagnation in growth and development, which is exactly what these games fix.

The best way to think of working your brain is to compare it to an athlete training. The athlete trains daily to work on his speed, strength, coordination, etc. You need to train your brain to retain information, retrieve important information, and discard worthless information. This will allow you to focus the mind better and you will be able to have a better memory because of it.

Brain games do not have to be long, simply a few minutes each day will suffice. However, they are meant to be difficult and challenge you. If you are doing a brain game and are able to quickly finish the game, you are not being challenged and should go to a higher difficulty.

It can be tough at first to put yourself in a difficult situation, but taking a while to beat a puzzle will strengthen your mind better than completing a puzzle easily. Again, it is easier for an athlete to lift a small amount of weight, but their muscles will only gain if they are in a position where they can barely lift the weight.

There are many ways to access brain games, from books and newspapers to computers and cell phones. It is not important where you play the games, just so long as you do them each and every day. Your mind will be better because of it.

Cognition And Learning New Activities

The ability of the brain to learn and process the information that we receive through our senses is called cognition. Humans have an innate cognitive ability and are able to perceive things quickly and adapt to new situations and learn from these situations. We can increase our cognitive abilities by using proper brain training which will help us recall things easier, be able to focus more intently, and even reduce the risk of dementia and other brain diseases.

Humans learn through all of the things that come into contact with our senses. It doesn’t just have to be through reading books or studying through school. Each and every environment that we immerse ourselves in, we take something in and learn. As we continue to do things over and over again, our brains cognitively process this information and use this information to recall how to act or react to our environment.

Without cognition and the ability to recall things that we have learned, it would be like we would be re-born over and over again with a clean slate and empty mind. As soon as we cognitively process a piece of information, our brain forms a neural pathway to make it easier to recall the next time we are in a similar environment or situation. The more times that we repeat this process, the more clear the neural pathway is defined.

Without the ability of cognition and to learn and adapt, we may be in serious trouble. For example, we have learned about gravity through the painful process of trial and error when we were young. It hurts to fall and so over time, we have learned to balance ourselves and not to take any crazy risks, like by walking off the edge of a high rise building.

If we didn’t have cognition to understand how things work and to learn and adapt, we would not be able to survive as a human race. And so with time, we have slowly evolved to a point where we now have the great ability to learn many things at an incredible rate.

Besides just being able to conceive things at an elementary level, like what goes up must come down, we can train our brains to learn more complex things. We can teach ourselves to figure out complex math computations, learn new languages, and build new pieces of technology to solve problems at the snap of a finger. Cognition is something that should be used to better your life.

Memory Exercise to Help You Remember Things

Our brain may be the most important, yet most undertrained part of our body. Most people don’t realize that you have the ability to train your brain to get it to function more efficiently just as you would train a muscle to do the same. Using just one memory exercise a day can drastically increase your ability to remember things.
First of all, seeing that the brain may be the most important and most used organ in the entire body, we must treat our bodies with respect and take care of ourselves all of the time. This means that we must eat healthy and exercise regularly because everything that we do and consume does in fact affect our brains.

Eating healthy means that you should maintain a healthy diet packed full of plenty of fruits and vegetables. Just try to be conscious of what you eat and put into your body on a daily basis. The better you eat, the better you will be able to think more clearly and focus on the task at hand.

Exercise too will allow your brain to function more efficiently and the way it was designed. You don’t have to train like a body builder, but you should be aware that regular exercise is a natural way to stay healthy and keep your brain functioning properly as well.
Once you have both aspects of your diet and exercise down, the rest comes easy. But still, there are plenty of actual brain exercises that you can do to increase your cognitive abilities even more so.

Playing card games, Sudoku, cross words, word scramble, and puzzles are all great ways to train your brain and help you increase your memory capabilities. The best part about these games (besides the fact that they are fun) is that they are available cheap and even free!

There are also plenty of paid programs on the internet that you can use as a professional way to improve your brain functions. While these are not required, a few of them have proven to help people make drastic changes to their lives.

Go online and do a brief search for memory exercise and you will find all kinds of free games to challenge and train your brain to help it to be able to remember things much better. Keep in mind that improving your memory using these brain activities isn’t something that is going to happen overnight. Consistent daily training over time will surely work and you will see and/or feel/notice the progress.
