Computers Boost Brain Plasticity

New studies are showing how computers can boost brain plasticity with patients who suffer from mental illnesses for example. Brain plasticity the brain’s ability to make new connections and function more efficiently, the more connections your brain makes the better it work for you. So as science identifies more ways to increase brain plasticity it can help a lot of people.

In this particular study they focused on computer training programs that are designed specifically to increase cognitive abilities. There was one study conducted on people who suffered from schizophrenia and another study focused on people who had other mental illnesses. Each set of patients did computer activities designed to focus on the front area of the brain.

The past 20 years have seen major advances in neuroscience research and we have learned much more about the mechanics of the brain and the changes it goes through in a lifetime. In the group of people with schizophrenia the doctors used 31 patients with a longstanding history with the disease as well as 15 healthy control patients so they could compare the difference.

The patients received 80 hours of intensive computer training in the laboratory. In the first round of MRI reality monitoring they did a word association test. The healthy people showed increased functionality when recalling these words. The people with schizophrenia showed no increased brain plasticity. After the training the patients with schizophrenia identified a much larger amount of words and showed significantly more brain activity when doing it.

The study was completed over a 16 week period the more computer training tasks the patients did the more they started to catch up with the healthy patients in terms of processing and brain plasticity. Also by the end of the study their social functioning was very much improved also.

The same results were found with the other patients. The scientists with this study used the Stroop test to measure attention, flexibility and functioning during an MRI. These patients as well showed an increase in brain plasticity and functioning after using computer brain training programs.

In addition one of the more startling findings was that the mind at rest also saw increases in activity. With the healthy group and at rest mind went into a decline of activity. The other unexpected finding is though there as increase in brain plasticity there was no increase in grey and white matter. The scientists attributed this to the natural decline of plasticity seen in patients.

Today we have new technique that can help maintain and improve brain health of individuals through brain training. Leveraging brain plasticity, brain training has been proven to be an important tool to have a healthy lifestyle. Through computers and online programs, you can actually leverage that plasticity of your mind to exercise the cognitive abilities that are important for your daily life. Memory, concentration and other abilities need to be maintained as long as possible and can be even further improved over time. Thanks to computer, the world today can remain healthy and even sharper!

Brain Plasticity Can Help You Keep That Thought

The brain is an amazingly complex yet somewhat resilient organ. A feature called brain plasticity allows the brain to retain information as it learns new things. It can also enable different parts of the brain to perform functions they normally cannot do. Let’s explore this further.

In simple terms, brain plasticity refers to the ability of the brain to change throughout a person’s life. This is a physical process and it is driven by many factors. But repetition plays a very critical role in brain plasticity.

For example when we learn something new, then neural pathways are created to account for this action. If the learned activity gets repeated, more neural pathways can be created which can further help a person to retain and remember this new information.

This type of activity is very much in use with children. A young child has relatively few neural pathways. But as the child is exposed to new things and learns more, he/she creates many new neural pathways which plays a critical role in that child’s ability to learn and remember.

At the same time, as some functions degrade that can be related to a breakdown in neural pathways. So if we forget someone’s name, it may be because some of the neural pathways associated with that memory have become broken or damaged.

But the changes in our brains which can occur through brain plasticity can be either for the better as in the ability to remember things or negative as in a breakdown in neural pathways which can cause a lapse of memory.

The physical process of aging has been associated with a decline in mental functioning. This is due to a breakdown in neural pathways. But recent studies have shown that with the right kind of training, even an older person can apply the process of brain plasticity to reform new neural pathways and improve mental functioning at any age.

It is therefore believed that advanced techniques employing brain plasticity can be used to help people to regain many mental functions which were otherwise thought to be lost. So it need not be a fact that the older a person gets, the more his/her mental processes decline.

Brain
plasticity can also be used to help to retrain certain areas of the brain to perform functions it otherwise is not designed for. Techniques have been used to help people to regain functions which were otherwise lost due to injury or disease of certain areas of the brain.

Employing techniques which take advantage of brain plasticity can be an exciting non surgical alternative to help people to retain their mental functions and even improve upon them no matter what their age. So very exciting breakthroughs are occurring every day and will continue to evolve.

As an example, by constantly brain training, you could really have an impact on your cognition and the quality of your cognitive skills. Brain fitness has been demonstrated to be an important part of a health lifestyle and everyone might want to try to keep their brain healthy the way you would for your body.

Thanks to brain plasticity, we can now help our mind be sharper and healthier over time.

Dementia And Your Brain Plasticity

Dementia is a difficult medical condition, which can impact many people as they grow older. There are different types of dementia and their impact varies. This is a difficult worldwide problem. As more people continue to grow older, the number of people affected with dementia is only going to rise in the coming years and create a real issue for individuals as well as for the society as a whole. Let’s discuss some of the causes, symptoms and treatments.

In general dementia plays a significant role in memory loss, deterioration of higher-level cognitive functions, language and emotions.

While there are different types of dementia, most cases are degenerative and there is not known cure. Alzheimer’s is a common type of dementia.

Another common form of dementia is called Lewy body disease. It generally affects older people. The disease causes unusual protein structures to grow and develop in different areas of the brain. These protein structures disrupt normal brain functioning and worsen over time.

Vascular dementia is a form of dementia, which is caused by strokes. There are also several medical conditions which can lead to dementia. This includes Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and brain infections such as AIDs or Lyme disease.

There are some kinds of dementia which can be stopped or reversed if identified in the early stages. Brain tumors, changes in blood sugar, excessively high levels of sodium or calcium in the blood, or low vitamin B12 levels can all contribute to dementia symptoms.

However if identified early enough, the symptoms can be reversed with proper treatment.

Dementia is generally regarded as an older person disease. Most people under sixty years of age are not impacted by this problem. But as they age, the risk of developing dementia increases.

In the early stages of dementia, a person may exhibit some forgetfulness. It can then progress to mild cognitive impairment and eventually impaired judgment, emotions or other cognitive skills.

As indicated earlier, there are no known cures for this problem. However there are many techniques which can be applied to minimize the impact and improve a person’s quality of life. For example there are techniques and exercises which stimulate the brain and enhance its mental functions. Those techniques usually leverage the brain plasticity to recreate some new neuronal pathways or challenge inactive parts of the brain.

Over time this can improve things like memory and other cognitive function. You can find many helpful techniques by visiting some websites which focus on this disease. Some of them are set up as games so they can be engrossing and entertaining. Others should be implemented and gauged by others.

It is also important to help to protect the brain and make certain it receives proper nutrients and minerals. A number of natural compounds have been shown to have great benefit in that regard.

More and more effective techniques are being developed all the time so it is important to check out these advances. In this way the impact of the disease can be slowed significantly and allow its sufferers to continue to live a full and robust life in many cases.

New Scientific Software To Improve Concentration

CogniFit, a leading developer of online brain training and cognitive programs announces the release of its new application, "Concentration", designed to assess and train higher-order attentional processes such as focused attention and vigilance.

The capacity to concentrate and focus is one of the most important abilities we possess. In a society overloaded with information, a growing number of individuals are complaining of their lack of ability to concentrate. Statistics show that more than 5 million children have also been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD in the U.S. alone. Thus, assessing and training concentration and focus is a key element for a healthy and more productive lifestyle.

CogniFit Brain Fitness

Dr. Evelyn Shatil, Chief Scientist at CogniFit, explains: “Higher-order attentional processes such as the ability to willingly orient and focus our attention on a task, the ability to readily maintain a high degree of vigilance or the ability to willingly ignore potentially distracting elements in our surroundings are processes crucial to the initiation, perseverance and successful completion of a task. Yet, a very large number of adults, children and youth experience difficulties in the control and application of those concentration processes.”

Research has shown that training those abilities brings valuable attentional benefits to the trainees, which may, in turn, be instrumental in improving behavior and performance at home, at school and at work. People with a concentration problem have a tendency to procrastinate at work and/or to leave tasks undone or unfinished at school. They may experience stress, anxiety and depression as a result of their inability to perform satisfactorily.

The CogniFit concentration application specifically trains the selective orientation of attention, focused attention, vigilance, updating of incoming in formation, visual attention and the operation speed of those processes. The application comes with three new training tasks and is priced at only $4.99.

CogniFit is today the only platform that leverage brain plasticity to combine a versatile and personalized brain training program for cognitive abilities with an application specifically designed for the training of concentration and memory.

Tommy Sagroun, Manager at CogniFit, explains: “The CogniFit concentration app brings unique and tangible benefits by helping individuals to remain more alert, focused and efficient in their daily life.”

Mental Health And Feeling Good About Yourself

The brain is one of the most important organs in our body and is still an important mystery. Scientists around the world are continuously discovering mesmerizing capabilities of this organ. The unique thing about our brain is the way it can make us feel and how it controls those emotions. We can refer to mental health therefore as a positive situation in which we feel positive with how we perceive and respond to the world around us. Let’s explore this topic further.

Good mental health can be viewed as a very positive thing meaning that it is something that we all wish to experience. Most of us want to be able to feel happy and respond well to those things around us. For example good mental health can help us to feel good about who we are and how we perceive ourselves. It can also help us to better project ourselves in the future with a positive outlook.

Poor mental health is typified by an inability to deal with our surroundings and how they make us feel. Therefore a positive mental health situation is always desired by most of us. We often try to get to the point where we can feel good about our situation and how others perceive it. Poor mental health can have a very disturbing impact on our life. In some cases, it is important for an individual suffering from any mental health related issues such as strong anxiety or overwhelming stress to go visit a specialist. Keeping a good mental health is key to live a healthy lifestyle and be well.

There are a number of things which can help people to achieve good mental health. The first thing is to keep the brain healthy. It is therefore important to make certain that your brain receives proper nutrients and that the chemicals in the brain are properly balanced. If your diet is healthy, then the brain is normally kept to a healthy level as well.

But if someone is not feeling in control or is not well adjusted with how he/she responds to the outside environment, certain specialized techniques are often sought which can help people to improve their mental health through brain plasticity.

Many such counseling techniques involves discussing certain aspects with the patient in the hope of helping them to deal with how they feel and respond to their environment. Many of these techniques have been shown to be very effective.

There are trained practitioners who can work with patients on a one on one basis and help them to achieve a strong level of positive mental health. There may be certain prescription drugs which can be of benefit as well.

But one of the problems in identifying mental health problems is the fact that many people may feel that they need help but are too embarrassed to admit that they have a problem. It is important to educate people as to the importance of seeking assistance in ways to respond to and deal with how the world around us makes us feel. It is a very important step in helping to improve mental health for everyone involved.

Brain Plasticity Can Be Changed By Learning

Brain plasticity is a common word used in science to refer to the brain’s ability to change at any age. It is a physical process where your gray matter can actually shrink or thicken and new connections can be made inside your brain or even made more efficient. Each time you learn something new your brain makes a new “connection.”

Over time the more of these connections you make the more efficient your brain is and it becomes much better at processing information. When we are young we are constantly learning new things and as a result this is though of as the biggest period of brain plasticity in our life. When we get older and more set in our ways we spend less time learning new things which results in a decline in our brain plasticity.

Neurogenesis is the concept that the brain can recreate new neurons. Even though we lose a lot of neurons everyday, by leveraging brain plasticity and challenging and exercising our mind regularly, we can create new neuronal pathways in our brain. This is an important biologic and chemical process as this helps us learning new information and processing new experiences.

Having this information is very powerful because it means you have the ability to improve your thinking and memory. Keeping your brain sharp will mean improved cognitive memory and making better decisions. When you are able to solve problems better that means your life won’t be filled with so much stress and you can manage the day to day better. Having a healthy mind and a good brain health is proven to be an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. You want to take care of your brain in the same way you are taking care of your body.

Sounds good right? So how do you make it happen? The best way to keep your brain plasticity in top operating condition is to stimulate the brain. That doesn’t’ mean you need a head massage but instead you need to always be learning. You can stimulate the brain many different ways including reading a book, learning something new or even physical activity.

You can also do a brain training game on your computer. There are several different types of “brain game” software’s that have short exercises that are designed to improve your cognitive skills and brain plasticity. These only require a few minutes of your day and give your brain the workout it needs daily.

Learning is the best way to improve you brain function. It doesn’t have to be learning out of a school book either it can be something that you are very interested in. If you like fast cars learn about how the engine works. If you love to bake teach yourself many different techniques both easy and complex. You can find memory programs and other ways to exercise your brain in many different facets of life.

So start improving your brain plasticity and function today by thinking about ways you can push yourself to learn new things. Having a healthy brain goes a long way in having a much less stressful life and being more productive in your day-to-day activities.

Improving Brain Plasticity

Brain plasticity is the lifelong ability of the brain to reorganize pathways and ultimately become more efficient. We long thought that your cognitive abilities where fixed throughout life. Scientists have discovered and demonstrated in the past decades that this was not the case and that is what we generally refer as brain plasticity and neurogenesis. Your brain can expend as well as decline depending of what you do with it. As we learn or have new experiences the brain is constantly reorganizing the paths to send and process information in a more organized and better way.

The more you leverage you brain plasticity to help your mind perform at its peak level, the more you can develop your thinking abilities and ensure you keep a good brain and mental health. Creating these new experiences and paths can go a long way in improving memory and improving your critical thinking skills. These changes take place naturally through your life but also can be improved by you through brain training and stimulation.

This thought process of training your brain is somewhat a new concept but the general population is rapidly accepting it as the benefits are many. Extensive brain studies have proven that the brain is highly malleable and as a muscle could be trained to reached specific levels. In fact your brain can grow or diminish over time based on the type of stimulations it is getting. The more stimulation of your brain the more effective your brain plasticity becomes.

Mental training of the brain can include such things as reading a book, learning something new or getting your brain thinking about or experiencing new things. Doing these things keeps the brain sharp and focused which will help you through your day to day activities. It will make you think quicker and be able to problem solve more quickly. The key is to be able to constantly challenge your brain and feed it with new and relevant stimuli and information.

Get creative on ways to improve your brain plasticity if you have kids get them involved too. Helping them have better brain function will make it easier for them to concentrate in school and get better grades. Old and young alike can gain benefits from giving your brain a good workout. It is never too late to start caring for your mental health

This also brings up a good point that later in life your brain goes through a natural decline. We become not as sharp and remembering things becomes more of a task. If your brain has been worked out and is sharp when this decline starts to happen it will be a much less drastic decline.

If you are looking for a quick way to get your brain in shape take a look at a computer program designed especially for this purpose. You can spend just a few minutes a day to keep your brain in optimal shape. That means better thinking, better memory and that you can pay better attention to the things going on around you. Improving your brain and leveraging its plasticity is important for everyone.

Cognitive Skills In A Nutshell

Cognitive skills are essentially the tools needed for proper and efficient learning in your brain. They consist of mental capabilities that are needed to learn academic subjects. And when they function properly, it is more easy to read, think, prioritize, understand, plan and problem solve.

People often get confused between cognitive skills and academic skills. All of the mathematics, English, science and other subjects taught in the classroom are academic skills. The basis for cognitive learning is solely within the mental capabilities. When these skills are weak, academic learning can becomes an increasing struggle.

One question that is often pondered on is whether or not cognitive skills can improve. The good news is that it is possible for them to improve. Thanks to brain plasticity, you can train your brain and cognitive abilities and create a lasting change. There is room for improvement as these skills can be strengthened and enhanced no matter how old the person may be. Even younger people can benefit from training their cognitive skills.

A key point to keep in mind is that it is not necessarily how much you know, but how effectively one processes the information that is received. You will often times find students in the classroom simply cramming information into their head before a test. But a few weeks later they cannot remember what they just learned.

Cognitive skills are the processors of the incoming information and external stimulis. They are the skills used to attend to and retain the information as well as process, analyze and store facts and feelings. On top of this, they can create mental pictures, and help you read words and understand various concepts.

No matter what type of information it may be, it must usually be processed with a variety of these skills first. Cognitive processing can be broken down tremendously according to how active and higher up it is. It is the active processing and higher thinking of these skills that will in part determine how successful one’s learning becomes.

If your attention or concentration is weak, there is the chance you never fully heard the request. If your short-term memory is weak, you may have forgotten the question in the first place. If you tend to process things slower, something that may have been too complex to process will need you to have it repeated many times over.

If logic and reasoning is weak, coming up with a solution can become a problem. With poor auditory processing, depicting various sounds is often problematic. The same goes for weak long-term memory and poor visual processing as it all impacts how you learn and how you retain new information.

The point of the matter is cognitive skills greatly impact what you learn and how well it is learned. Just always keep in mind these skills can be developed, enhanced and strengthened over time. These skills have also a great impact in your overall life as the way you process information and use it is linked in many ways to your daily living experience.

Brain Plasticity And Your Mental Health

The brain can be a very resilient and flexible organ even if its complexity is probably of the highest of the human body. Your brain has the ability to alter its structure and functions through time naturally and in response to external stimuli. This is called brain plasticity which we will talk about further. Brain plasticity has in some sorts revolutionized the way scientists approach our brains. Decades ago, we believe that our brain capacities were fixed and could only decline with age. Today we understand that through brain training we can help to keep our brain and memory healthy for the long-run.

Brain plasticity can involve fundamental changes to the brain such as the creation of new neural pathways or disconnection of old neural pathways. The creation of new neural pathways is an important part of learning. This phenomenon happens usually when your mind is stimulated with new information and data. By participating in challenging and different activities, you can make sure your brain networks are fully working and developing themselves.

When a person is very young, they do not have nearly as many neural pathways as they do when they grow older. As the child is exposed to new things through external stimuli, the neural pathways can get created. As this is reinforced more pathways become created. This helps to cement the information in the child’s brain and he/she learns something new.

So in simple terms if a child touches something hot, he/she learns very quickly that this is something which should be done or an unpleasant situation can result. The child remembers that the object should not be touched.

Brain plasticity can also involved the ability of the certain sections of the brain to take over functions which were previously not performed by that area.

It should be noted that there are three main forms of brain plasticity. They are as follows:

1. Synaptic plasticity – As described earlier, this has to do with the ability of the brain to create new neural pathways when new information or stimuli is introduced. If it is repeated enough, the brain responds by creating these new neural pathways. This helps to reinforce the ability the store new knowledge and enhance learning.

2. Neurogenesis – It was widely believed for many years that the numbers of brain cells we have are fixed and that they do not multiply. This has been a primary reason given why brain function declines with age.

However in recent years it has been shown that it is entirely possible for new brain cells to be created from the stem cells. This can lead to a fully functioning brain cell.

More research is necessary to help to fully understand this situation and take advantage of it.

3. Functional compensator plasticity – This involves the ability of the brain to retrain different areas of the brain to take over functions which are not normally performed by that area. So if a part of the brain becomes damaged from injury or diseases, brain plasticity can help the patient to learn to use other areas of the brain to do the same thing. It is an amazing process.

Brain Plasticity And Mental Health

Up until around the 1970s it was widely accepted that throughout adulthood our nervous system was fixed, meaning it was impossible for new neurons to develop after birth. However, a new theory of brain plasticity, also called neuroplasticity, has become he current accepted theory of how our brain ages.

So, what is brain plasticity? The broad definition is it is the lifelong ability of the brain to reorganize neural pathways based on new experiences. Basically, we continually acquire new knowledge and skills throughout our lives. In order for us to learn a new skill or fact our brain must undergo a functional change. When the brain changes to learn new things, which is brain plasticity.

One great example of how neuroplasticity works is to imagine making a footprint in a pile of snow. In order for your footprint to appear in the snow, a change must occur in the snow. The shape of the snow changes as you press your foot into the snow. The same situation occurs in your brain. Your neural circuitry reorganizes in response to experiences.

Plasticity plays a role in learning and memory. What research over the last two decades has proven is that there are two types of modifications that occur in the brain during learning. First, there is a change in the internal structure of neurons, primarily in the area of synapses. Second, there is an increase in the number of synapses between neurons.

While brain plasticity occurs throughout your entire life, there are actually different types of plasticity that occur during certain periods. One type of plasticity will be more relevant during one period of your life and will be less prevalent during another period.

There are two main conditions that neuroplasticity occurs in the brain. First, there is developmental and learning and memory plasticity. These occur during normal brain development when your brain is first beginning to process sensory information. Second, there is an adaptive plasticity that occurs to work for lost function or to maximize the remaining functions of the brain in the event of brain injury.

Finally, it is interesting to note that genetics are not the only factor that influences the brain. The environment that an individual is in shapes the brain. Also, an individual’s actions in that environment also play a role in brain plasticity.

Brain plasticity, or neuroplasticity, is a truly remarkable concept that has taken off in the last three decades as the agreed upon theory as to how our brain changes over time. It is an interesting concept and one that I hope you have enjoyed learning about.

Brain Plasticity Explained

Brain plasticity is basically the ability of your brain to adapt to and learn new things. It allows us to train our minds to expand to great lengths and take on new mental challenges. Brain plasticity allows us to learn new languages, understand new concepts and hard wire them into our brain so that we can recall them easily for future reference. The brain is constantly changing and adapting to new things with time.

The ability of the brain to physically change is one that happens over a period of time. It is not something that can happen immediately, although with proper training brain plasticity can occur much faster.

As the brain learns to adapt to new situations and take on new, foreign challenges, it will physically transform the way it is shaped. This is where the term plasticity comes from because your brain fires on different neural pathways each time you learn something new. As you consistently feed this new information to your brain, it will eventually form a new neural path so that you can easily recall this information for future reference.

As an example, this is why students study for exams. They use the plasticity of their brains to get good grades on their tests.
In order to recall the things that they study, they have to constantly go over the subject material again and again until the brain forms a new neural pathway that they can use to recall when the time comes to take their test. These new neural pathways will not form and they will not be able to recall what they study unless they do it consistently enough for their brains to physically transform. This is brain plasticity.

Having the knowledge to know that your brain can take on new challenges and learn new things is something that you can definitely use to your advantage. This plasticity gives you the ability to actually train your brain to learn unlimited amounts of knowledge and even recall these pieces of information at lightning quick speed.

If you are not constantly learning new things and training your mind to work more efficiently, the exact opposite will happen. Becoming complacent and not challenging your mind will actually make you lose your memory and you will be more susceptible to brain disorders like dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Take the time to understand brain plasticity and start forming your brain to take on more information and to learn new things. This process will help you to better focus, think much clearer and live a better life.

Brain Plasticity And Learning

The manner in which a child learns and retains new information is involved in brain plasticity. It is the way in which the brain can change its physical structure in response to information it experiences. It can also help someone to regain certain functions which were lost due to injury and disease. Let’s explore both of these aspects further.

A child is born with billions of brain cells, many of which are interconnected through neural networks. As the child becomes exposed to certain stimuli, the effects of brain plasticity cause physical changes in the brain such that new neural pathways may be formed. If enough are made it can help to solidify the recall of this new information.

This is a primary mechanism in which children can learn. If a child accidentally touches a hot surface, new neural networks will form. This will help to alert the child not to touch that surface again or he/she could get burned.

This is especially true for stimuli which is repeated or intensified. It can cause multiple neural networks to form which further solidifies memory and the information learned. This is why repetition can be vital in the learning process.

As people age, their neural networks can break down. Over time this can impact the ability of a person to recall certain information. However the nature of brain plasticity can help to reverse this. It is important to challenge the brain to reform certain neural networks and counteract the breakdown which may occur over time. It is therefore not necessarily true that mental function deterioration cannot be addressed and treated as we age.

The nature of brain plasticity can also be a very important way for patients to recover certain brain functions which may have otherwise been lost due to disease or injury. For example techniques have been developed and applied to patients who have suffered injury to certain areas of their brain. There were able to gain function which was otherwise lost by retraining different undamaged areas of the brain to take over these functions.

But the very nature of brain plasticity allows children to maximize their learning activities. And it is an important way to reverse the impact of aging on mental faculties. If proper techniques are applied, impressive results can be expected.

However it is used, brain plasticity is an important way to maximize the function of our brains and improve the quality of our lives.

Brain Plasticity And Its Relation With Learning

Brain plasticity is a process by which the brain can alter its physical structure and function in response to stimuli changes. This is an essential way in which children can learn and retain information based on new and unique stimuli. Let’s discuss more aspects of neuroscience and brain plasticity here.

When a child is exposed to unique stimuli, he/she tends to create new neural pathways in order to process the input and respond to the stimuli. If it is repeated enough there are multiple neural networks which can be formed. This helps the child to remember the information and is an integral part of learning.

Young children begin with unformed neural networks but over time more and more networks are formed to enhance their ability to learn. It is therefore very important to keep children stimulated so they can create the neural networks necessary to enhance learning.

As we age and are exposed to less unique stimuli, the neural networks may degrade and break down. This can contribute to a loss of memory and a general deterioration in cognitive brain function. However by its very nature, brain plasticity can help people to retain and even increase brain function by continuing to build and enhance both existing and new neural networks.

The brain responds well to special exercises which enhances the creation of new neural networks. This aspect of brain plasticity plays a very important role in enhancing brain function throughout a person’s life. The adage that brain function deteriorates with age simply does not have to hold true if the brain is kept healthy and challenged.

A number of specialized exercises and drills are available to take the most advantage of brain plasticity mechanisms. You can find different exercises, games and drills by searching the Internet for neuroscience and scientifically validated cognitive training.

Brain plasticity is also an integral part of treating patients who have suffered from diseases of the brain or brain injury. They can be taught to use different areas of the brain to learn new functions which otherwise were not normally controlled or processed there.

Depending on the situation, it can be a very important way for people to regain critical brain function following disease or accidents. The process must be controlled very carefully and repetition is key. However over time, the brain can respond very positively and bring back and enhance many functions previously lost.

Brain Training To Stay in Shape

Our Brain controls so much of what we do and how we think. It is an amazing organ. Much has been learned about this miraculous part of our bodies and much more still needs to be learned. However one thing we know is that brain training is an essential part of how we learn and how well we can apply that information and knowledge. Let’s discuss some techniques in further detail.

As children we learn a great deal. Everything is new and our brains are like sponges which soak up information and eventually learn to process it effectively. This is how we acquire new information and knowledge.

Over time we take in more and more information but we may not be as efficient or effective in the manner in which we organize, store, and process that information. There are brain training techniques which can help.

For example some people are particularly adept at memory utilization while others have difficulty remembering key events, places and people. There are proven techniques which help to train the brain how to take various information and then recall it accurately as necessary.

Different techniques and exercises may be appropriate for children while others are better suited for older people. Memory enhancement techniques are particularly helpful for older adults who tend to lose memory.

In some cases the brain has lost some of its ability to store and retrieve information. However many of the techniques can help the brain to reorganize the manner in which it processes, stores and retrieves information.

Other techniques can help to train the brain to process different functions like reading, vision related skills, critical thinking, and reasoning. The brain is an amazingly resilient organ and responds very well to techniques which are designed to challenge how it functions.

These training exercises are very much like physical exercises. The body responds very positively to physical exercise and it makes us much healthier. Brain training can have the same results and they can help the brain to function much more effectively and improve your mental capacities.

Brain training exercises can be found in many ways. Many sites on the Internet list different techniques which are optimized for different functions. They may be organized by the type of application as well as age and individual situation involved.

You might also check with a medical professional for further recommendations and guidance regarding brain training methods and techniques.

How Brain Plasticity Affects You And Your Cognition

Brain plasticity has to do with the ability of the brain to alter its structure and functions in response to external changes and stimuli and affects your cognition. Some of these can involve molecular changes such as new neural pathways or disconnected neural pathways. And others can entail other parts of the brain taking over functions which it might otherwise not perform. There are three main forms of brain plasticity which will be described below.

1.Synaptic Plasticity – When new information is learned or experienced, the brain may create new neural pathways. As the new information or stimuli is repeated, these neural pathways can be further enhanced. This helps to cement to new knowledge or information.

It is said that practice makes perfect and synaptic plasticity is a great example of that. As the neural connections become better defined, the information is transmitted faster and more effectively.

This is a crucial way in which people learn new things and then are able to retain it over a long period of time. Children grow, develop and learn many things largely through synaptic plasticity.

2.Neurogenesis – For many years it was widely believed that brain cells do not multiply. It was believed that we start out with a fixed number of brain cells and that as brain cells die, they are not replaced. This was the primary reason given for brain decline as we age.

However in recent years it has been shown that brain cells can in fact be duplicated which could improve cognition. It occurs when stem cells divide. One cell is another stem cell and the other can become a fully functioning neural brain cell.

So for catastrophic situations like a stroke which can kill many brain cells, neurogenesis has the ability to regrow new brain cells to replace some of those lost and help your cognition.

More research is required to better understand this mechanism and perhaps find ways to enhance the process.

3.Functional Compensatory Plasticity – It has been found that synaptic plasticity can be less of a factor in older adults than it is in younger people, especially children. So for many older adults, they may have a more difficult time learning and retaining new information.

However there are many older adults who are equally adept at retaining new information and learning effectively. In some cases it is more effective than some younger adults. What was found that when older adults process new information, they not only use the same brain regions as younger adults but may also involve other areas of the brain which the younger people may not use.

Since some areas of the brain are not as effective in synaptic plasticity with older adults, they compensate by using other areas of the brain. This is also a key element in training people to overcome disabilities caused through disease or damage to certain areas of the brain.

Some functions which are normally associated with one area of the brain can be learned to be done with other areas of the brain. In this way the brain can be very flexible and forgiving when it comes to learning and retaining new information.

Why Brain Fitness Is Essential For Your Brain

What is brain fitness? There is a new industry emerging that helps us maintain or even increasing our brain function as years go by. This industry, backed by scientific research, says we can use certain methods to stimulate our brains. These programs claim to increase the connectivity between the many parts of our brains.

Since the largest percentage of the American population is increasing in age, and the wants and needs of the baby boomers are still driving our economy. Baby boomers want to keep their brain sharp and brain training might actually help them.

It is very important to understand, that in order for the brain to be sharp, you need to exercise it regularly. This is something that most people do not do. We spend much of our time watching television or surfing the internet. As people age, their physician may recommend that they exercise their brains regularly in order to keep their minds sharp.

Brain fitness means to keep your brain in good health or good physical condition. This can result in the exercise of your brain and maintaining proper nutrition. The brain is the only organ in your body that is both physical and mental. The mental part of the brain is called the mind. This is the target of the brain fitness industry. They provide different programs that can increase brain function and brain activity that will help stimulate new connections and new circuits to help keep your brain stimulated.

The ability for these connections and circuits to form depends on how physically healthy your brain is. The physical health of your brain depends mostly upon the physical activity, sleep, and nutrition you give it. This is also needed for all of your body parts. You need to be physically and mentally healthy and brain training is the gym for the brain!

Skills, knowledge and quick decision making are what brain fitness programs improve. However, you need the best ingredients to supply the proper nutrition, physical activity to amplify the delivery system for those ingredients and much needed sleep to keep those systems working well. If you do not maintain your brain through brain training, you have less of a chance to be sharp as you age.

In order to keep a healthy brain as we age, we must focus on all of these approaches. Brain fitness pertains to everyone, not just the baby boomer generation. What we do to keep our brains fitness when we are children or young adults, contributes to how efficiently our brains will work throughout our lives.

The Relation Between Brain Health And Brain Plasticity

The health of your brain will ultimately effect the fulfillment of your life. A brain that doesn’t function and fire the way it should can have unknowing results on your feelings and daily mood. This is why it is so important to learn more about brain health, brain plasticity and how both can dramatically improve your standard of life.

What is brain plasticity?

The ability of your brain to change dramatically through learning and experience makes the human brain so very unique. Plasticity refers to this fact that your brain is constantly changing for better or for worse as you age and live out your daily cycle.

And this is not just a figure of speech, the actual gray matter in your brain alters physically as you learn more and experience events throughout your life. Besides the gray matter changing form, your brain also uses neural pathways and connections that give you feeling and shapes the way you feel at any given moment. This is also constantly changing with time as well.

Anytime you learn something new, you are creating new pathways in your brain that will hardwire itself in their so you can recall it and perform the same task again without having to relearn how to do it.

These pathways also go away with time when you don’t have to use them for an extended period of time. If you have ever forgotten someone’s name, this is a good example of that neural pathway being broken.

Brain health can be optimized with certain mind training and brain rehabilitation exercises and programs. Using advanced and scientific programs like CognaFit will help keep your brain healthy as you age and you may also even increase cognitive abilities with consistent training.

New brain research is telling us that brain plasticity is even more remarkable than we originally thought. Our brain functions are tightly tied in with our emotions and feelings and we can train them to stay positive and healthy even as we get older. We can even use brain training programs on people that have known illnesses like autism, bipolar disorder and depression to better their lives and eliminate the illnesses for good.

So if you want to maintain great brain health or even improve your own memory and learning abilities, take advantage of your own brain plasticity and use scientifically proven programs to train your brain for the better. Remain sharp and witty through brain exercises and training.

Brain Research And Its Findings

We are learning a lot about our brains and how they function by using new technology and focusing in on new studies. Much of the current brain research is used to focus on overcoming brain trauma as a result of anxiety, stress, depression and other mental illnesses.

Through neurofeedback we can see how the brain fires electronically and use our findings to fix the misfires through brain training and rehabilitation. Physical trauma to the brain as well as emotional disturbances can lead to disruptions and in the way the brain functions. People with mental illnesses and depression have much different looking neurofeedback than those with no known mental illnesses.

Today we use a combination of machines and technology to read this neurofeedback and we are finding that we can indeed control the way our brains fire.

Through the use of MRI and EEG machines we can actually see how the brain fires when doing brain research. We can then test out how well certain brain training works to get the brain to fire as normal.
First you test out the patient’s brain activity before the training begins, during, and then once it is through. People with depression, anxiety, panic attacks and other mental illnesses like ADHD, autism, and bipolar disorder have all shown major improvements through proper mental brain training.

Analysis through EEG feedback as well as personality and mood changes gives us plenty of proof that these brain exercises through scientifically validated brain training programs do actually work.

People that have experienced daily occasions of panic attacks and severe depression due to emotional trauma experiences in their life have reported complete recoveries after going through such brain training. Of course it hasn’t worked for every single patient, but the good news is that we are on the right path and we can use these test results to build on our knowledge and create better brain function training programs to help even more people.

With time and enough brain research we may find the cures to many diseases and illnesses through brain rehabilitation without the use of medicines or radical surgeries to do so. We are finding much conclusive evidence that the brain does indeed have the power to retrain and cure itself from traumatic events.

As we learn more about how the brain functions, we will also learn more about how to train the brain to function more efficiently. Brain research is a vital part of the future for doctors and hospitals. The brain can accomplish marvelous feats and we are just at the forefront of learning its true capabilities.

Why Brain Training Works

With all the thinking your brain does for you in a day, how much time do you spend thinking about your brain? Truth is your probably don’t think about it much at all. Brain training and brain fitness are essential to your overall health and if you aren’t currently doing it you should be.

So what is brain training? Cognitive brain training consists of a variety of exercises that are meant to improve brain functioning. You can also refer to it as brain fitness. These types of activities can help you have a better attention span, help you think clearly before and acting and help you with processing information.

Brain training has benefits for a whole range of people. It can help an average healthy adult’s mind stay fresh and in top operating condition. It can seriously decline the onset of dementia for older individuals. It also has benefits for people with attention disorders such as ADD and ADHD. It seems pretty obvious if you think about it for a minute but keeping your brain healthy is good for everyone.

One of the main breakthroughs recently in the brain fitness industry is using computers as a tool to train the brain. Cognitive brain training is usually a one on one activity which can be time consuming and expensive. However with computer programs that do the same activities that a therapist would do it makes this type of brain training available to a much larger audience.

Most computer brain training software includes activities such as puzzles that are designed to stimulate thinking skills and help you to be a better problem solver. In addition these activities can also improve reasoning, memory, attention and response times. To get the best benefit most programs say that you should spend a few minutes each day doing brain fitness activities.

There are other types of brain activities you can do at home as well. You can find many guides online that give lists of activities to help grow certain functions of the brain. These are definitely effective as well. The main difference between these types of activities and brain training software is that the software is designed with a scientific method as a basis.

Brain Training Becomes A Development Enabler

In the history of human development, it has been intensively studied what are the main conditions and factors answering a simple question: why do some countries thrive while others don't? What are the biggest challenges of developed nations to move forward? This article will unveil the importance that enhancing the society brain power has on our future, and namely the effect of brain fitness in our future.

By now it would be expectable that a consensus would exist about the reasons for the success of some when compared with others. But the expectations aren't always as clear as they seem. Many studies, analysis and books have been written about this subject, while a clear consensus, almost like a roadmap, doesn't yet exist. But there are a few common conclusions worth noting, and one structural condition that explains the developments all along: the brain power.

If we go back in time, in the XV century it would be rather unlikely that the biggest revolutions and developments in the world over the coming centuries would come from a tiny continent called Europe. At the time, it would be much more likely that this revolution would occur in Asia, namely in China. What has made the difference? Military power in Europe was one of the reasons, more specifically, the adoption of gunpowder and firepower at the service of war. It gave an edge, but it wasn't the decisive factor. The main influencer was technological development through the development of an educational system (mostly in Northern Europe). The developments in technology which were important for sailing and warfare were also crucial for the development of mercantilism and the creation of a manufacturing economy in parts of the continent.

Later came the industrial revolution, starting in the United Kingdom. It is widely accepted that the UK had specific and unique conditions to be the first one to develop the industry. First it had access to capital, through trade and the domination of the seas. It had natural resources, namely coal, essential in the first phases of the revolution. But it had one very particular advantage which became instrumental: perhaps the best educational system and educational standards in the world at that time. This was a very difficult advantage to copy, it took a long time for others to follow its steps. It was indeed the brain power that created this competitive advantage. That was the condition then and it remains so nowadays.

More recently we can think of other countries which have gone through important revolutions, taking them out of the underdevelopment. Some of them have natural resources, some of them even have access to capital... but all of them have first developed a structured educational system which would support their development. A few examples: Japan, South Korea or Finland. These countries score amongst the highest levels at the international PISA study (which compares the educational knowledge of 15 year olds in many countries). All of them haven’t been part of the first phases of the industrial development, but they have quickly recovered after the WW2, based on the economy of knowledge.

The brain power has been in all cases the disruption factor, the one that has define "who was in, and who was out". As we look towards the future and towards an even more impressive globalization in the world, the question remains: have the countries and the people really understood that it is within themselves, their brains and their ability to develop their own cognitive capabilities? Some have, some haven’t. The fact remains, that education, but mostly, the increase in the effectiveness of the brain usage of a whole society is what will separate, today and in the future, the ones who are in and the ones who are out. Learning how to develop the brain functions is the next step for those who are in. This is where Brain Training plays a role as a development enabler, on top of quality of life improvement. This is where Brain Fitness becomes the center of our own future.
