New Developments and Hope Around Brain Injury

The brain is truly an amazing organ and it is responsible for controlling virtually every part of our bodies while at the same processing information and enabling us to respond and experience the world around us. It is a very complex organ. But it is also an extremely sensitive organ that is protected only by our skull. Brain injury can have tremendous and devastating impacts on the way we live our life and function everyday. However recent advances in medical science offer hope to some victims of serious injury. Let’s discuss this further.

As indicated earlier the brain is very susceptible to injury and is very fragile. It is protected from most types of injury because it is surrounded and protected with a hard bony structure called the skull. In addition the brain floats within the skull and is protected from normal movement.

However if the brain suffers a more serious injury, there can be many consequences. A common type of serious injury can occur with a car accident for example. In that case the skull can be impacted or suffer a large blunt force. Other type of accidents is when practicing violent sports where you are not well protected.

The skull can be impacted and even broken. Or in the case of a bullet wound, an object can actually pierce through the skull and enter the brain which can obviously have much more serious conditions (even if a simple accident can be a dramatic event for your brain). But even if the skull is not pierced, serious injury can occur with a blunt force trauma.

In this case the brain can suffer a large force which causes it to impact the inside of the skull. At the point of impact the brain suffers an injury and swells. Since the volume within the skull is fixed, pressure builds on the brain and can cause either further injury.

If the brain becomes damages, it can result in death to certain areas of the brain due to clotted blood vessels which disrupts the supply of blood to critical area. There are also many other kinds of damage which can occur.

The damage to certain areas of the brain can result in many problems. It can result in paralysis of movement or speech. Or there can be significant long term impacts in one’s ability to perform certain mental functions easily like critical thought, language or visual processing.

However recent medical developments offer hope to some victims. There have been a variety of surgical techniques which can help to correct some of the damage suffered from injuries. In addition a number of treatments have been used to help to train other undamaged areas of the brain to take over certain functions that were previously controlled by the damaged sections.

At the same time many of these techniques can take time and a great deal of effort. But there have been some impressive results and scientists and researchers are working very hard to improve the techniques used to help people who are suffering from the effects of brain injury. There are also brain games that you can use to train your cognitive abilities which might have been impacted by the injury. In any case, it is important to try to maintain a healthy lifestyle to try to recover from that injury.

Recovering From A Brain Injury

Recovering from a brain injury is a long process in most cases. There are people who have miraculous and quick recoveries but this is more the exception that the rule. Most people have to work and fight very hard to get back functioning to the point they can comfortably do their day-to-day activities. Some people never return to that point at all.

After the initial crisis period of the brain injury there are a lot of pieces that need to be picked up and put back together. The crisis period includes the time period where you the person is initially injured and any hospital or ICU time that comes in the days or weeks thereafter.

Assuming the person is getting better and has a good prognosis at some point they will be ready to go home and then phase two which consists of various therapies start. The person may need help that they did not need before such as with shopping, cleaning and other day to day activities. For a certain amount of time there will likely be some unrest it figuring out how to get it all done and provide the person with the care they need.

This can become overwhelming and if you are caring for a loved one who has suffered from a brain injury you may want to consider joining a support group to avoid depression for example. The ability to talk to other people who are going through your same situation can really help a lot. You will need people to lean on during this time so do not be afraid to ask for help. If you are the now the primary caregiver for your love d one then you need to be in the best mental shape possible to deal with all of the issues that will arise.

You will likely have a whole list of therapies and follow up appointments that need to be tended to. Take it step by step and enlist help from your family and close friends. You will find that people are more than willing to lend a helping hand where they can but you have to be open to receiving that help to get it.

Assuming the therapies are working you may find that each day gets a little easier for your loved one. If you don’t see those changes quickly though don’t be discouraged. Keep walking the path and doing what you need to do for them and you will eventually find your light at the end of the tunnel.

Identifying The Proper Treatment For A Brain Injury

When one thinks of a brain injury, it is typically a serious situation. However, it is important to note there are varying degrees of severity with some causing far more damage than another. Regardless, identifying the proper treatment for your situation is a must in order to lead a long a fulfilling life.

The ultimate goals of brain injury treatment begin with stopping any bleeding that may exist. From there, preventing an increase in pressure within the skull and controlling the amount of pressure when it does increase is a must. Next, the doctor will attempt to maintain an adequate blood flow to the brain. And if there are any large blood clots, removing them as soon as possible is pertinent.

As mentioned, treatments for a brain injury will vary depending on the type of injury you have suffered. There are several different options the doctor will choose from accordingly to ensure you recover as quickly and safely as possible.

Positioning is important as having the head of the bed elevated slightly and the neck up straight can allow proper blood-flow. This particular position can decrease the intracranial pressure so that the blood and cerebrospinal fluid can drain properly from the brain.

Fluid restriction may be necessary to limit the amount of fluids that you are receiving. You have to think of the brain as a sponge. When it swells, extra fluids are present. With a limited amount of fluids, swelling can be controlled efficiently.

There are a number of medications that may be offered by the doctor depending on the severity and the pain the patient is in. Some common medications include diuretics which are used to decrease the amount of water in the patient’s body, and anticonvulsants, which are used to prevent seizures.

If the situation is serious enough and calls for it, surgery may be needed to treat the brain injury. There are three primary types of surgery; craniotomy, burr holes and bone flap removal. Of course, this will all have to be discussed in-depth with the doctor to determine if there are alternatives that are safer and more appropriate.

Because there are differing severities of brain injury, sometimes simple mind exercises and brain games can get the brain back on the right track. There are a plethora of exercises that can essentially work the brain out and gradually get it back into shape over time. This is of course the best case solution as it eliminates the need for surgery or medication whatsoever.

The Principal Functions Of The Brain

The human Brain is an amazing and vital part of our bodies. The brain controls virtually every organ in our bodies and it provides the means for us to think and act. Let’s discuss some of the important functions of the brain and where they occur.

The cerebral cortex is one of the largest parts of the brain and it is what makes the brain so complex and able to operate in a unique manner. The cerebral cortex is a large mass of neural tissue that covers the area of the forebrain.

Keep in mind that part of the reason why man can function in a much more sophisticated and complex manner is because the size of the human brain is about three times larger than an animal, which is similar in size. The human brain can simply do more because it has built in capabilities to do so.

Another area of the human brain, which distinguishes itself from other brains, is the frontal lobe. It is quite large in relation to other brains from similarly sized animals. The frontal lobes are the part of the brain which performs things like self control, abstract reasoning, abstract thought, and planning.

The occipital lobe is another part of the brain, which is believed to enable vision to occur. This area is also quite a bit larger than the same area in the brains of other animals.

There are also sections of the brain which perform tasks on a more unconscious level. For example the brainstem is an area of the brain which controls automatic functions like heart rate, breathing, etc. It is believed that the brainstem is a more primitive part of the brain as it does functions, which do not typically require higher thought.

Other key areas of the brain include the following.

It is believed that higher level thinking occurs within the neocortex. This is also integral to learning and memory. The manner in which the body is controlled for movement and posture occurs within the cerebellum.

There are other sections of the brain which contain extensive neural cells and transport mechanisms. In addition certain glands are present which create compounds, which are vital in enhancing brain function and control.

The brain is a highly complex but sensitive part of the body. It is largely protected from damage and injury due to its encasement within the skull. The brain is also cushioned from most impacts by surrounding it with a viscous fluid.

However injury can occur if the skull is damaged or if the brain suffers an impact, which causes the brain tissue to become pressured. If the brain becomes damaged and swells, it can create more problems because the pressure cannot be easily relieved. If a brain injury occurs, it is important to minimize swelling as well as relieve pressure if it occurs.

Brain Injury prevention through the use of protective headgear is a very important goal. If you can protect your head, you can typically protect your brain from most injuries.

Brain Injury And Your Overall Health

The brain is an incredibly complex and sensitive organ in our bodies. It allows many bodily functions to be controlled without conscious involvement. And it provides for many ways to think, reason and respond to our environment. However brain injury can become a very serious problem. So let’s discuss this further.

Normally the brain is well protected from injury. It is encased in a hard shell called the skull and cushioned from injury through a fluid which cradles and supports the brain. However as stated earlier, brain injury can create a whole bunch of problems.

The most common type of brain injury occurs when the skull is damaged by a blow to the head. In many cases there is no long term problem. However depending on the amount of blunt force, no problems may result.

However in many cases, a blunt force trauma can have significant impact. This type of problem occurs when the skull is struck. The force of the impact may damage the skull and or cause some type of breakage. If the fluid which surrounds the brain is allowed to flow unchecked, it can have serious results.

Or if the brain suffers a blunt force problem, it generally responds by swelling in size. This can create even more problems since it is not a good situation for the brain to swell in a constrained area. If this does occur it creates excess pressure on the brain and may result in even more damage to the brain.

The good news is that there are many recent techniques to minimize or alleviate the impacts from a blunt force. This can include draining of brain fluid if it is noted that the brain has begun to swell. This can avoid many of the problems associated with swelling of the brain following an injury. Also exercising your brain with brain training could help alleviate some of the damage on your cognitive abilities.

Emergency techniques have been established to help medical personnel to determine if that brain has been affected by a blunt force. This is vitally important as it can avoid letting a minor problem turn into a major one by not properly addressing the situation.

And there are many types of products available which can help to further protect the brain from injury. One of the best ways to do so is through the use of a helmet. It has been shown that this can significantly reduce the incidence of brain damage. So prevention is usually best way to reduce this very serious problem. Brain training can also help improve the different cognitive skills that could have been impacted.

Improving Memory After A Brain Injury

A brain injury can be a very scary time in someone’s life. Many people recover from a brain injury, but some may never be the same. A brain injury does not have to rob you of your independence and there are some brain fitness techniques you can use to help you regain some of the memory that you may have lost.

Brain plasticity is something that you may not know much about. The brain is a very pliable organ. This means that when you have some type of injury you may be able to recover some of the cognition and other cognitive skills that you have lost due to this type of injury. This is something you will want to spend some time thinking about and find the right exercises that are on your current level to help you overcome and go on with your life.

The brain is responsible for controlling all processes of the body. An injury can affect someone in many big ways. The memory is a common area that is affected after a brain injury. This can be very devastating depending on the degree of memory loss. This can be frustrating for the person affected and also those around them. When you begin to focus on a memory exercise, this can help you to possibly recover this skill that you have lost to some degree.

If cognitive skills are affected, this can be a very disturbing part of a brain injury. Brain research is improving the way brain injuries are treated and this can require a great deal of rehabilitation after this injury. The neurons in the brain are always forming new connections and this is where improvements can be made. A brain exercise that includes making new neuron connections is important to improving the quality of life for the person affected.

Mental health can be changed after a brain injury. The person may feel more depressed and this can inhibit quality of life. When you begin to really look at the brain for the answers you will find that the brain is responsible for mental health and there might be some exercises you can do to help overcome any mental problems depending on the degree.

A brain injury does not have to take away your life. If you are willing to put in the hard work you might be able to improve the current condition you are living in and help to add to the enhancement of your life. This can help you to improve memory and many other skills that are important to daily life.
