Being Overweight May Lead to Reduced Cognition

A new study asks the question does a big belly lower your cognition. A Korean study suggests that it might. We all know being overweight is unhealthy in general. It can wreak havoc on your heart, joints and many other key body functions. Little was known before now though about how it affects the brain.

The study consisted of 250 adults age 60 or older and was designed to see if there is a link between obesity and cognitive decline. Prior to the study the researchers calculated the participant’s BMI or Body Mass Index and used scans to check cognition based tests. Subjects with the highest BMI performed the worst on the cognitive skills test.

The biggest association seemed to be with people with large amounts of visceral fat which is fat found around the torso otherwise known as belly fat. The results suggest that with extra belly fat people could be at a higher risk for brain diseases such as dementia. Oddly there was less of a link with obesity and lower cognitive skills in the people over 70 compared to the people between 60-70.

Although researchers are not 100% sure the difference about the age groups they believe is based on the fact that people by that age who have dementia likely would have lost a lot of weight. The conclusion is that by decreasing obesity you decrease your chance of cognitive decline or risk of dementia.

The more the loss of cognition goes on the more likely people are to suffer long term problems. There are many reasons to not be obese but considering how important the brain is for day to day functioning keep your brain fit may be the best reason of all to lose weight.

There have been many general health activities that have lead to a healthier brain and better cognition. Some of those other things include physical activities and eating right. Overall the healthier you are the more likely you will not deal with a loss of cognition or dementia later in life.

Cognition is the name that science refers to mental processes including attention, remembering, producing and understanding language. Cognition is usually associated with our brains because all the elements of cognition happen there.

It used to be thought the brain and nervous system did very little changing over a lifetime. The concept was that barring an injury or a disorder you were born with the same brain you died with. Your brain process many new information during a normal day. Your brain is also the center of your cognition. So do you know what your cognitive abilities and skills are? You can not learn or focus if you cannot pay attention which can make it more difficult to remember new information. The second of the cognitive abilities is memory. Cognitive memory is the ability to store and recall information on command. This can be the big things like remembering the answers for the test or even the little things like remembering where you last placed the car keys. This includes both short term, contextual and long term memory.

Your cognitive abilities also control your logic and reasoning. The ability to reason makes it so you can solve problems. Solving problems is crucial to having a good and healthy life. Life is messy and has problems if your cognitive abilities are sharp you can work through them much quicker. The next cognitive abilities you rely on are auditory and visual processing.

Your cognitive abilities gather the information on everything you see and hear and process it in a way the brain and your cognition understand it and you can ultimately act on it. If these two things are not sharp it can affect school work for kids, real work for adults and the ability easily do math problems or read a book. For kids in school these are very serious problems.

Lastly cognitive skills affect your brain processing speed. Depending on how sharp your processing skills are this will determine how easily you can solve problems or process information to make informed decisions. People with ADD or ADHD usually have slower processing speeds which is one of the things that make it harder for them to excel at certain things.

The good new is that all of you cognitive abilities can be trained and improved upon. Using these skills and exercising them is the best way to keep them sharp. Cognition And The Stages Of Cognitive Development

As babies, our minds begin as empty slates ready to absorb information. As we grow, we go through cognitive development that enhances our cognition and brain parts. Developmental psychologist Jean Piaget created four stages of cognitive development which map out the progression of development a child experiences.

First, what is cognition? Cognition refers to all the mental activities associated with thinking, knowing, remembering, and communicating. Essentially, anything that involves your brain goes through cognition. Everything we see, hear, smell, touch, or think goes through cognition.

Also, who is Jean Piaget? Piaget was a developmental psychologist that spent his life researching the development of a child’s mind. He found that children’s minds went through a series of stages, developing from a newborn’s simple reflexes to an adult’s abstract reasoning. The four stages he identified are listed below.

Four Stages of Cognitive Development

Sensorimotor: This is the first stage of development and typically involves children aged birth to 2 years. In this stage children are experiencing the world through their senses and actions, by looking, hearing, and touching. Children also develop object permanence, the idea that even though you cannot see an object it still exists, and stranger anxiety, the fear of strangers.

Preoperational: This is the second stage of development and typically involves children aged 2 to 7 years. In this stage children begin representing things with words and images. Children in this stage also use intuitive rather than logical reasoning. Piaget believe that children in this age are egocentric, meaning the children have difficulty taking another’s point of view.

Concrete Operational: This is the third stage of development and typically involves children aged 7 to 11 years. In this stage children begin to think logically about concrete events. They are able to grasp concrete analogies and perform arithmetical operations. Conservation, the principle that properties remain the same despite changes in the forms of objects, is a key development in this stage.

Formal Operational: This is the final stage of development and typically involves children aged 12 and up. In this stage children begin to think using abstract reasoning. Children are able to solve hypothetical propositions and deduce consequences.

Although parts of Piaget’s theory are questioned, such as the age some of the development occurs, a majority of his theory of cognition and its development is still as true today as it was when he created it. By understanding the four stages of cognitive development you can ensure that children are developing at a normal rate.

Cognition And Learning New Activities

The ability of the brain to learn and process the information that we receive through our senses is called cognition. Humans have an innate cognitive ability and are able to perceive things quickly and adapt to new situations and learn from these situations. We can increase our cognitive abilities by using proper brain training which will help us recall things easier, be able to focus more intently, and even reduce the risk of dementia and other brain diseases.

Humans learn through all of the things that come into contact with our senses. It doesn’t just have to be through reading books or studying through school. Each and every environment that we immerse ourselves in, we take something in and learn. As we continue to do things over and over again, our brains cognitively process this information and use this information to recall how to act or react to our environment.

Without cognition and the ability to recall things that we have learned, it would be like we would be re-born over and over again with a clean slate and empty mind. As soon as we cognitively process a piece of information, our brain forms a neural pathway to make it easier to recall the next time we are in a similar environment or situation. The more times that we repeat this process, the more clear the neural pathway is defined.

Without the ability of cognition and to learn and adapt, we may be in serious trouble. For example, we have learned about gravity through the painful process of trial and error when we were young. It hurts to fall and so over time, we have learned to balance ourselves and not to take any crazy risks, like by walking off the edge of a high rise building.

If we didn’t have cognition to understand how things work and to learn and adapt, we would not be able to survive as a human race. And so with time, we have slowly evolved to a point where we now have the great ability to learn many things at an incredible rate.

Besides just being able to conceive things at an elementary level, like what goes up must come down, we can train our brains to learn more complex things. We can teach ourselves to figure out complex math computations, learn new languages, and build new pieces of technology to solve problems at the snap of a finger. Cognition is something that should be used to better your life.

The Link Between Cognition And Cognitive Development

Cognitive development is a specialized field of study which is part of both neuroscience and psychology. It focuses on child development as it relates to information processing, conceptual development, perception, language, and other areas of brain development and cognition. Much of this topic focuses on how a child perceives the world. We will discuss this interesting field of study and its impact on child development.

The scientist Jean Piaget was a driving force in the formation and founding of this field. He developed his theory of cognitive development. As it turns out, many of his theoretical claims have fallen out of favor with the current scientific community.

However his ideas of cognitive development as moving from actions and perception in infancy to a better understanding of reality as the child grows is largely accepted and has been adopted as the core principles in the study of cognitive development and cognition.

Many researchers speculate and theorize that children are born with cognitive systems, which can help them to tackle problems man has faced for many years. Other scientists study how they skills can be learned in such a short period of time.

Many scientists believe that there are a number of core systems of cognition which makes it much easier and more effective for children to develop different types of cognition. Some of the more commonly referenced systems include:

1.Numbers – It has been found that infants possess two systems for dealing with numbers. One system is optimized for small numbers and is called subitizing. And another deals with larger numbers and can approximate their measure.
2.Space – It has been found that very young children have an innate ability to navigate their surroundings. It has also been found that this ability to discern space is involved in the development of complex language skills which occurs between the ages of 3 and 5. Later on, adults tend to use language and symbols to reason out their information.
3.Visual Perception – Children can discern 3D objects from a very young age. However there are much more complex aspects of visual perception which occurs during their early development years and beyond.
4.Language – A very studied and important part of cognitive development involves the acquisition of language. It has been shown that learning and social experiences plays a key role in the development and acquisition of language.
5.Essentialism – This system has to do with the viewpoint that all entities function on their own and have individual properties.

How Brain Plasticity Affects You And Your Cognition

Brain plasticity has to do with the ability of the brain to alter its structure and functions in response to external changes and stimuli and affects your cognition. Some of these can involve molecular changes such as new neural pathways or disconnected neural pathways. And others can entail other parts of the brain taking over functions which it might otherwise not perform. There are three main forms of brain plasticity which will be described below.

1.Synaptic Plasticity – When new information is learned or experienced, the brain may create new neural pathways. As the new information or stimuli is repeated, these neural pathways can be further enhanced. This helps to cement to new knowledge or information.

It is said that practice makes perfect and synaptic plasticity is a great example of that. As the neural connections become better defined, the information is transmitted faster and more effectively.

This is a crucial way in which people learn new things and then are able to retain it over a long period of time. Children grow, develop and learn many things largely through synaptic plasticity.

2.Neurogenesis – For many years it was widely believed that brain cells do not multiply. It was believed that we start out with a fixed number of brain cells and that as brain cells die, they are not replaced. This was the primary reason given for brain decline as we age.

However in recent years it has been shown that brain cells can in fact be duplicated which could improve cognition. It occurs when stem cells divide. One cell is another stem cell and the other can become a fully functioning neural brain cell.

So for catastrophic situations like a stroke which can kill many brain cells, neurogenesis has the ability to regrow new brain cells to replace some of those lost and help your cognition.

More research is required to better understand this mechanism and perhaps find ways to enhance the process.

3.Functional Compensatory Plasticity – It has been found that synaptic plasticity can be less of a factor in older adults than it is in younger people, especially children. So for many older adults, they may have a more difficult time learning and retaining new information.

However there are many older adults who are equally adept at retaining new information and learning effectively. In some cases it is more effective than some younger adults. What was found that when older adults process new information, they not only use the same brain regions as younger adults but may also involve other areas of the brain which the younger people may not use.

Since some areas of the brain are not as effective in synaptic plasticity with older adults, they compensate by using other areas of the brain. This is also a key element in training people to overcome disabilities caused through disease or damage to certain areas of the brain.

Some functions which are normally associated with one area of the brain can be learned to be done with other areas of the brain. In this way the brain can be very flexible and forgiving when it comes to learning and retaining new information.

The Importance Of Neuroscience

Neuroscience entails the study of the nervous system. This field of study was originally associated with biology but it has been found to also tie in with chemistry, engineering, linguistics, engineering and others. We’ll discuss a little more about the history and details of this field of science.


Neuroscience dates back to the days of ancient Egypt. As surgeries related to the brain were performed even back to the Neolithic times. This included drilling of holes in the skull to relieve pressure on the brain caused by injury and disease. There are ancient texts written by the Egyptians as far back as 1700 BC which indicates that they had some knowledge of the symptoms of brain damage.


The ancient Greeks, especially the father of medicine Hippocrates believed that the brain controlled emotions, intelligence and the essence of our being. This was further supported by scientists later on. It was originally believed that the heart controlled mental functions and was central to our consciousness.

Neuroscience really developed following the invention of the microscope. At that time techniques were developed to uncover the structure of neurons. It leads to the development of the neuron doctrine which states that the functional unit of the brain is the neuron. This doctrine was supported by experiments related to the electrical excitability of muscles and neurons.


It was found that certain regions of the brain were responsible for certain functions. Mathematical models were developed in the 1950’s to show how transmission of electrical signals in neurons could occur.


Neuroscience progressed significantly during the second half of the twentieth century. This was largely due to advances in research techniques. It became possible to understand is great detail the processes which occurs within a single neuron.


At the same the study of how networks of neurons interact to produce complex behaviors requires more study and investigation. It is poorly understood at this time.


However there is a great deal of emphasis and investigation related to better understanding how the neurons work together to manage cognitive activities, emotions and thinking in general. There has been a great deal of effort placed on understanding how the brain functions and then developing treatments for various diseases and injuries which may be impacting peoples lives.


Neuroscience plays a vital role in studying the function of the brain and then developing techniques and treatments for different problems. It will continue to advance our understanding of these functions and help develop effective treatments.
